Can someone explain how and why you get hiccups

I have just had them. Tried holding my breathe and being scared but
that didn't work. The thing that did work was gulping water.

Hiccups are sudden, involuntary contractions of the diaphragm muscle. As the muscle contracts repeatedly, the opening between your vocal cords snaps shut to check the inflow of air and makes the hiccup sound. Irritation of the nerves that extend from the neck to the chest can cause hiccups.

Although associated with a variety of ailments (some can be serious such as pneumonia or when harmful substances build up in the blood for example from kidney failure), hiccups are not serious and have no clear reason for occurring.

You're welcome  I only copied off an internet medical site!

There are so many suggested ways of getting rid of hiccups, some are quite funny. I guess different things work for different people.

Gulping water worked for me this time. I bit of a relief really, I am sure my hiccuping would have driven my boss mad!

I always spell them hiccoughs.  Also I always find the best remedy is to drink water out of the wrong side of a glass.  This invariably means you end up getting half the water down your shirt but it seems to work.

If anyone has a nosebleed I have a cure for that too.

I bet a wet shirt treatment has the potential to cure many other ailments too.

I have never had a nosebleed in my life but my man gets at least one per week.

So what's your nosebleed cure, Bounty?

You stuff nettles up your nose.  The inflammation caused by the stings staunches the flow and allows clotting.  Surprisingly, this was the normal remedy for serious nosebleeds by the Romans.

Disclaimer: The above precaution is not recommended as there is an outside risk of complications.

The cure for a nosebleed is to put a cold tin or keys on the back of the neck.

You get hiccups from eating quickly? I get them if I've been laughing too much.
Best way to get rid of them is to take a spoonful of white sugar and wash it down with water. But that's gross, so I just hold my breath and count as high as I can very quickly.
