DT666 Went To London!
« on: August 19, 2013, 06:50:22 pm »
I recently went to London and visited some chocolate places whilst I was there. I've already been reviewing some of my purchases. Anyway, firstly I hit the chocolate emporium in Liberty's, which was quite well stocked! I ended up buying some William Curley stuff (which I haven't reviewed yet). Later on, I visited Paul A. Young's chocolate shop in Soho; it truly was a thing of wonder. Everything I bought there I have reviewed, so have a look if you haven't already. I was tempted by the Mast Brothers chocolate they had, but at £8.95 a bar, I politely declined. I suppose their stuff has to be specially imported from New York, hence the price.

The next time I go to London (which won't be for a while), I may go back to Paul A. Young's shop for some truffles, even though they were quite expensive!

I have some terrible memories of London. Didn't hit any choc shops the times I've been there though, which may be why.

London is a horrific place! People everywhere! On the street, in the shops, on the buses, on the underground! It's insane. I avoid the place wherever possible.

I'd actually gone there to the David Bowie exhibition at the V&A. The planned journey went totally wrong, but I'm not getting into that. London is, indeed, a horrific place. I was born 20 miles away from the place, so I know more about London than I wish I did. I'm sad all the good record shops have disappeared now, though.

I have only been to London once and that was the Christmas before I was 10. My mum and I went for a long weekend. We didn't go anywhere near any chocolate shops but I had a wonderful time.

We travelled everywhere by tube and I had never been anywhere as fascinating in my life.
We went to Covent Garden market and I bought a small blue and white cat, which I still have.
We did a tour of the houses of parliament where I sat in the chair no-one is supposed to sit in unless you are a royal person. Ooops lol
We went to St Paul's cathedral and I spent hours staring in awe at the huge trees they had there covered in baubles that were as big as my head.
We went to Buckingham Palace and I bothered the horses in Horse Guard's Parade.
We went to Trafalgar square and I stroked all the lions, and we went to the Tower of London and it was closed..  :'(

I have an awful feeling that London is probably nothing like it was when I visited, but when I spent my weekend there it was magical.

I was born in Walthamstow, east London and lived in the Walthamstow/Chingford area (except for a brief period spent living in Crouch End) for 31 years. I then moved to Peterborough, where I have lived for 25 years. Walthamstow/Chingford  was a great place to grow up. We lived on the edges of Epping Forest and that became our playground in the 60s/70s. We enjoyed good schools and a real community experience. We rarely ventured to 'big London' - which was a 20 minute train ride away. However, things have changed drastically in my former home. The streets are dirty and full of traffic. The lovely independent shops we visited have been taken over by kebab shops (kebabs! In Chingford!!) and shabby take-aways. the Victorian houses have been converted to multiple occupation and everything is shabby and run down. Very sad.

When I think of London at Xmas, I can still feel the horror of the last Xmas Eve I was up there, which was many moons ago. It was utter hell. I thought you couldn't get any more people in London, but I was wrong. I attempted one tube journey and have never experienced such a crush in my whole life; it was terrifying! I vowed after that that I would never go to London again and would definitely never go there at Xmas!!!

I am really glad I went when I did, the experience was something I wouldn't give up for the world, but even before your posts I realised London is not how I remember it being and visiting our nation's capital is not something I would be happy to do today.

I haven't actually been IN London for many yearts... these days I just drive to Gatwick every now and then, and that's too close for comfort in itself.

To be fair, most of central London is wonderful. Despite the crowds, it's quite safe to walk about and just enjoy the scenery. I love to walk from the city (square mile) into the east end or wander along the river or just walk around the west end. There are beautiful buildings (you have to look UP to really enjoy them) and interesting little nooks and crannies down narrow, winding streets. However, out in the suburbs, things are very different - like most cities really.

I certainly worked near to the TVAM studios and saw/met a good few celebrities of the day on their way too/from the studios. Never heard of the Purple Turtle. I had the odd drink in the Camden Stores (a pub that no longer exists). This was back in 1982-85.
