Unique Xmas Gifts
« on: October 24, 2012, 03:34:59 am »
So, Christmas will be upon us soon yet again. I have pretty much all the shopping done already (uber-prepared this year, for some reason... though I wouldn't be without Amazon) and all that remains is the tacky, novelty crap. What I mean is I gave up buying sensible gifts that certain friends/family members really want years ago and I always get these certain people on my list utterly stupid and useless gifts for ten seconds of cemedic value only. Thing is, I've been doing this so long I've kind of run out of gag-gifts. Over the years it's been ninja hamsters, acres of land on the moon, singing fish and obscene parrots. Really, REALLY running short on ideas so I'm turning to anyone remaining on this forum for help. Any recommendations? Is there any useless, novelty item I have missed over the years? HEEEELP! I need some serious tat and I need it now.  :-\

Well, wjp, as you love car boot sales so much, why not shop around for retro junk? You can get some seriously naff items at out-of-the-way car boots that only happen if the local church or school is running one to boost funds.  I have picked up knitted Postman Pats, novelty mugs of long-forgotten TV characters and odd-shaped vases. Good luck!

That's a good idea to go retro. For my stepsons 16th last month we bought him an Atari 2600 and it went down very well indeed. Right, I'll be hitting the carbies at the weekend!

Also, do you have a store called Red near you? They sell all sorts of novelties such as robot chickens and some quite nifty (but expensive) gadgets for gadget freaks.

No, we don't have a Red anywhere near here. We usually get a Hawkins Bazaar open up temporarily for the season but nom sign of it this year as of yet. That's usually full of novelty, gadget stuff and not too bad... just a tad pricey. Going to really do some random googling tonight and see what I can find.

Something I did find in my local toy shop recently which I haven't seen since the mid-80's was an invisible dog leash! Was very happy and excited to see one of these again.

Yes, I was going to suggest Hawkins Bazaar but they have gone into receivership. Ours has closed down :(

Good luck with the car boots! :)

Oh, have they? Oh dear. What a shame. Hopefully there's some obscure website out there that caters for weirdos like myself.

What do you get a teenaged film student who loves horror movies? Well, I just found this amazing DIY zombie movie construction kit on amazon. It's basically full of cardboard cut-outs and stuff and the idea is you shoot your own horror film with it on your camera. Found a video on youtube someone had already uploaded after using it... how cool is this?

BHS have surpassed themselves for crap this year. A Heinz Tomato Ketchup teatowel in a tin shaped like a ketchup bottle anyone? (Don't buy before December: BHS reduce all their gifts massively every December. How they stay in business when they buy the same old crap every year and end up trashing the price pre-Christmas I don't know...)

I love these for their utter weirdness:

Just ordered this for my long-time VERY Christian american pen-pal. I think she'll appreciate the humour. (I think... never can tell with Americans.)

Well I figured the giant plush HIV bug was a little too much.
