Shocking ignorance
« on: July 11, 2012, 09:25:08 am »
Right, so I take two days holiday from work to finish decorating my living room, right? And I've got Pick of the Week on the radio (Radio 4) but my son says "You've got to watch this mum, it's totally hilarious"

So I turn off the wireless (!!) and watch these two strange, orange-coloured, half-dressed creatures (one female, one male) from a place called Essex talking to each other. So she's like "I fink the capital of India is Pakistan yea"? And he's like "No it's Persia innit?" and she goes "Is that a place? Nah, the capital (cap'i'aw) of India is Pakistan innit? Innit??"

Well, it was enough to send me back to work in horror.

The real horror is, I actually come from Essex - well , sort of, it's London, but it used to be Essex until it became a London borough in 1965. It's where east London meets Essex.  is this programme for real? Are these real people? Is TV proud to be displaying such ignorance??

Ooooh this thread could run and run!  My son has just moved to Australia for a year and I've been following some of his conversations on Facebook.  One classic was a friend (female) who asked what date they have Christmas there, thinking it must be in July.  Another said she didn't realise they had sheep in Australia as she thought the whole country was covered in rain forest!

Oh dear! No wonder I get students coming to my college aged 16 who don't know whether Bristol is in the north, south, east or west of England - or even whether it is in England at all!
And in any case, how much use am I as a teacher? One very sweet student wrote on my annual feedback form "you have tort us a lot of english july" (my name is Julie).
Yes, well, quite.  :)

No sheep in Australia? Strewth! my in-laws must have got mixed up when they sent me a piccie of 500 sheep on their next door's farm. They must have been little baby woolly kangaroos!

Someone I once made the mistake of 'friending' on Facebook used to come out with some classics. (Horrified fascination was the main reason I didn't delete him.) Last November he asked - in all seriousness - 'Whats this remembers day every1s goin on about?' Then earlier this year he got completely confused by the 100th anniversary of the Titanic because he didn't realise it was a true story.
Who needs karma when you know you're great already?
