(i'm determined to get a conversation going on this site if it kills me!)

channel 4 showed a very interesting film the other day called The Lovely Bones. it was directed by the god-like entity that is peter jackson and is based on a highly regarded book of the same name. i'd never seen it beofre (due to it's difficulty to obtain on blu-ray) and watched it in silent awe.

now i'd never normally post anything like this, but this film has me confused... it was either one of the best films ever made or the worst load of rubbish ever to appear before my eyes. i just can't decide which. i've never been in turmoil like this before over a film. (help me - i don't know whether to burn my LOTR dvd's or have them framed based on this!)

and just in case noone else out there has seen it and this turns into a dead thread... anyone seen anything worth mentioning of late? (and notice i used the word 'film' instead of 'movie'.)

OK well it's hardly forum news that I'm not a film (or movie) fan but I have read the book of The Lovely Bones and had similar mixed feelings about it.  Couldn't decided if it was sensitive and rather moving or a load of trashy chick-lit.  Wish I'd seen the film now as it might have helped me make up my mind.

from what i've been reading on the net the film follows the book quite closely. it's certainly a haunting story... i'm just really in two minds about it, which is a rare thing for me to be contrasted like this. it just seemed to be about half an hour of plot and a hundred minutes of surreal imagery. not that it's a bad thing, i guess, i just expected more. hmm. i don't know. this may cause for a second viewing.

I read the book The Lovely Bones and found it very absorbing and different. I don't usually read that kind of thing but I heard an excerpt from it being read on Radio Four and then managed to pick the book up at a car book sale for 20p.

I did see the Channel Four film and it did follow the book closely but it was difficult to get across the purpose of the book and its surrealism in a film.  In the book Susie explains about heaven and how everyone inhabits their own heaven in different stages and what the purpose of the guides are. The film didn't include the 'adult guide' that Susie had when she first went to her heaven.

I think the film did a good job - but if I hadn't read the book it would have confused me.

it caught me off guard, tbh. i wasn't expecting anything i needed to be high for to appreciate. i will give it a second blast. the more i think about it the more i like it. as a film, i thought peter jackson did the surreal fantasy crossover better in Heavenly Creatures.

another moving film i just watched... The Road. anyone read the book (by cormac mccarthy)? i found the film a harrowing yet brilliant journey which moved me in ways films generally don't.

No - didn't see that - but did see three quarters of Juno last night. I enjoyed it. It was nice easy viewing and no violence.

i loved Juno... it was a proper script-based movie, something which you really don't see too much these days. very sharpy indeed.

i'd advise everyone to watch The Road. it REALLY touched me. apparently (as always) the book is better... and almost identical to the film. (though it certainly doesn't fall into the nice easy viewing/no violence category!)

As usual I've read the book, haven't seen the film.  Yes the book is quite good.  Not recommended for those who like happy endings!

i found the film seriously depressing and uplifting all at once. it really is quite a chore to watch, but it's worth it.

i know what you mean as the book was a chore to read.  But I think that's the whole point if you see what I mean.
