Have you ever been called up for jury service?
« on: March 06, 2009, 06:02:19 pm »
A woman who celebrated her 108th birthday at the weekend has been called for jury duty despite being more than 40 years over the age limit.

A stabbin' if I recall. It went 5 days and the dick then pled guilty in the face of all the evidence.

It's awful when you are told not to discuss the case and you want to tell people.

you can, apparently. i got all sorts of threatening letters. but i just ignored and it all went away. (they werent sent recorded delivery or anything, so i was just going to plead ignorant if they came to get me and say i never received them.) just didn't fancy sitting in a court-room for hours on end.

My brother-in-law did that and he was arrested and taken in front of a judge to explain himself. He was then fined £1,000! Serves him right too. We live in a democracy that makes it essential for people to be willing to do a public duty such as jury service. If everyone could not be bothered, the system would have to be replaced with something less democratic.

I did jury service 20 years ago. It was a nasty rape trial. I can't say too much except that some months after the trial, the accused did something much worse and two people ended up dead.
Old but spicey!

I did, I went and got sent home.

What I don't think people understand about jury service is that if they don't turn up, it not only wastes tax payers money but also allows the criminal being charges with whatever crime a reprieve and also a step closer to freedom or a lesser sentence because the defence can use the CPS's fluffing about to their advantage.

However old spice, we do not live in any democracy, we never have and anyone who thinks we are, think again, your being lied to.

To live in a democracy you are required to take part in the "Entire" political process. Truth is we do not have that option and therefore can not live in a society that is democratic. We are just told we do.

As we as individuals have no direct voice other than the person we elect to speak on our behalf, it is not your voice but the voice of an MP elected to follow the party line and any representations that they make or views that they make are their own and not those of the people that they serve.

The word democracy comes from the athenian word demokratia, which losley translate in to "people power."

People who did not take any part in the democratic process were called idiotes which as you guessed it...  the word idiots come from.

Now, if they can have a democratic society back then, why not now and why is this country full of idiots that think that politics is boring or nothing to do with them? Fact is, most people talk politics without realising it.

Next time you have a good old whinge bag about prices, tax this, and how long you had to wait for a bus... its all politics at the end of the day.

If you really want a democratic society, you need to vote for it and I am not talking one of the top 3 or top 10 or so political parties.

Daft question but... who would you like to see in power?

Be careful what you wish for. Would you like a government like the ones that tend to form in Italy?
In a democracy everyone has a say but the majority must hold sway unless you wish chaos.
