Alcoholic hand gels make patients drunk.
« on: March 01, 2009, 04:45:09 pm »
Two hospitals in Staffordshire have decided to remove the dispensers from their wards, with the NHS so concerned about the thefts they have issued a Patient Safety Alert to all hospitals and clinics across the UK.

The cleanser, which has been in the NHS for more than four years and is used to tackle hospital-acquired infections such as MRSA, contains 75 per cent proof alcohol, nearly twice the strength of whisky.

The gel is supposedly undrinkable thanks to the foul tasting chemical additive bitrex but paramedics who have treated patients found with the dispensers say addicts will simply "drink through" the taste.

Duuuhhhh, its got alcohol in it, init! WTF do they expect?

My guess is that they nick it, distill the alcohol off it to make something I have heard called "Everclear" which is meant to be almost >97% alcohol.

This means that a few drops in your regual drink when out on the town gets you ratted cheaper and faster than quaffing 12 pints of large ass, I mean Larger.

The danger is that everclear is pure enough to kill you if too much is consumed as it is a CNS depressant like regular alcohol is. Thats why vodka and other spirits have large amounts of water content to alcohol content.

Anyone stupid enough to drink it deserves to die. That would soon solve the nhs bed shortage.

I thought this was old news - it was removed from the entrance of my local hospital nearly a year ago for the same reason.

They mustn't have removed it from all hospitals at the same time. This article was about a Staffordshire hospital and I know we still have the handwash in hospitals here. Hic  ;)

All the alcohol gel containers are all present and correct at the hospital I work at.  I heard three people died from consuming it.  Is this true?

I didn't hear that but if it happened then serves themselves right for drinking it.
