UK "Picture" ID style Driving Licenses
« on: September 28, 2008, 11:23:59 pm »
If you have a "Photo card ID" style driving license, you may be surprised to find that your license is only valid for 10 years.

In addition to that, you have to renew the license, you are not allowed to let it lapse or you face a £1,000 fine and 6 points, failure to pay will end up in your car being crushed.

The other issue is that you are now not able to "Give up" your driving license.

So we are now being stuffed by the DVLA and they have told no one.

This item was on yahoo a week or so back, I found it here: http://www.yourdrivinglicence.co.uk/what-happens-if-driving-licence-has-expired.html and here: http://www.driven-ltd.co.uk/photodrivinglicence.htm

So please advise everyone you know that drives, has just updated their license or has just passed their driving test as they are not likely to have been informed of this and it could be a costly shocker.

Were talking "Road" users with the new driving license that have Photographs of the licensed driver on them. If your scissor lift has a Q plate then your not allowed to drive it off premises like a public road if you do not have the right category on your driving license.

Even if YOU can not drive, you should be passing this information on to ANYONE who does and that they should do same, pass on this information because the quicker this happens and the more people know it is going to happen then it is less likely that someone is going to find themselves fines, car less and having points added to their license all for the sake of a license that expires early.

The "I didn't know" defense will not help anyone who falls foul of this legislation.

I don't know anyone that drives. And I can't because I've been getting dizzy spells for ten years! :'(
But I'll pretend I do care, so that you have an opinion of someone who does:

"This is ridiculous. Nobody told me when I got my driving licence it was only valid for ten years.
And if I let it lapse, I'll have a hell of a lot of points just for a simple mistake.
Whilst drunk drivers are free to continue with minimal points.

Plus I'd get a massive fine - and for what? Nothing! First the toll charge, then the petrol prices. When is this government going
to stop penalising us motorists?
Not to mention, we pay a fortune in road tax, most of which doesn't go on the roads -
they are in a shambolic condition!

Now innocent folk will lose their cars, and possibly their licence.
What right does the government or DVLA have to do this?
It's legalised theft! I am absolutely outraged! It's time us motorists banded together to
stop this silly nonsence once and for all!"

There, you go, an opinion from a motorists' point of view. Well not really, as like I said, I'm not a motorist.

I don't see what all the fuss is about - it's only like passports isn't it?  We should be responsible enough to notice when they need renewing.  Having said that, we're not really expected to be responsible for anything these days - I see in Sainsburys you can now arrange to get a text message sent to you to remind you to bring your shopping bags with you! You can also get a text or email to tell you when your library books/DVDs/CDs are due back - this is losing our Councils a fortune in overdue charges!

Yes but a tad cheaper than putting your money in Icelandic banks!

Yes, but the point of overdue charges is to encourage people to bring their books back on time, not to make the council money. Isn't it? ;)
