Milk 'reduces muscle damage'
« on: August 25, 2008, 08:49:43 pm »
Scientists have found that milk could help repair muscles after exercise.

Food and Drink Towers reports that a new study has been conducted into the effects of the drink, finding that it actually does more good than water or sports drinks.

Volunteers engaged in exercise designed to induce muscle damage before consuming the different drinks and results demonstrated that milk and milk-based carbohydrate-protein supplements were more effective in preserving muscles.

Nutritionist and director of The Dairy Council Judith Bryans explained the findings, which will be published in Applied Physiology, Nutrition and Metabolism.

"Previous research has shown milk to be an effective rehydration solution, while this is the first study to suggest that drinking milk following muscle-damaging exercise may decrease muscle damage," she was quoted as saying.

I get full fat milk delivered as I like the cream on top but I am considering changing to semi skimmed. What do you think is best for me?

It depends on what studies you read. Most say that you should drink skimmed or semi skimmed. However, recent research has shown that many women eat a very low fat diet, including only skimmed milk and that they are suffering from calcium deficiencies. This puts them at risk of brittle bones when they are older.  |The practice nurse at my health centre told me that if i eat a low fat diet, I should have whole milk or a yoghurt each day as long as I don't drink gallons of the stuff.
Old but spicey!

I've had semi skimmed for 20 years now, so on the rare occasions I have whole (say I'm at someone else's house) I find it too much. I could never switch to skimmed though - it's like white water.

I drink Wiseman's 1% and think it is fine.
Try skimmed STERILISED (not UHT) milk. It is sweeter and kinda creamy as it is slightly cooked. Not nasty like UHT though.

I genuinely hope you are confusing UHT milk with sterilised. The sterilised just tastes sweet unlike that awful flavour that the UHT has.
