Nurses too busy to feed patients....
« on: August 25, 2008, 08:10:45 pm »
BASIC steps to ensure elderly patients do not become malnourished in hospital have been snubbed by almost half of all NHS trusts, a survey suggests.
Despite ample evidence that many vulnerable older patients need help during mealtimes, the issue is being ignored by health chiefs.
One in three said they had not even introduced a “red tray” system which means patients who cannot feed themselves are served on a red tray, alerting nurses to their needs.
A separate check with nurses found that around half said they were not given enough time to help patients during mealtimes.

I found that when my father was in hospital me or my mother would have to be there at meal times to feed him otherwise his dinner was left on a tray and then taken away without anyone attempting to feed him.  Some days there were volunteers came in to help.  Perhaps it would be an idea to have these young offenders go help in hospitals rather than wash grafitti off walls or sweeping bus shelters or whatever it is they do.

My friend had a similar problem when her elderly mother was in hospital and unable to feed herself. The nurses wouldn't do it.  They didn't ensure she had enough fluids either. It's shocking.

Many years ago I started nurse training (I only did three months) and it was the junior nurses job to make sure everyone who needed help was fed. We had to report to the senior staff nurse or sister if anyone was off their food. we also had to encourage patients to drink and we had to keep fluid charts with records of how much each patient drank and how much water they passed. Keeping fluid intake up was a crucial part of patient care.

My father was constantly de hydrating. I read the other week that ginger beer is a very good drink to avoid dehydration but it didn't give reasons why. Anyway I have been drinking 4 glasses a day at work and have noticed a decrease in headaches.

I always keep a pack of ginger biscuits in the car in case of travel sickness.

Good idea. Arrowroot biscuits are good for something too aren't they? I think they are good for sickness and diarrhoea.

I have to say that just after I wrote about nurses not caring for patients that well I  was called to the hospital to see my father-in-law who suffered a heart attack yesterday afternoon. He was on the Coronary Care Unit and they were taking care of him beautifully. The nurses made sure he had something to eat and drink and they were looking after us too, offering us tea and cold drinks so I guess that bad examples are in the minority.

A friend of mine was in hospital recently and I was disgusted by the treatment he received. If things take time because nurses are overworked I can understand that, but on two occasions his partner and I had to go to the nurses' station and found the staff all crowded around the PC surfing the web!
Who needs karma when you know you're great already?
