Duchess of York in Hull

Did anyone watch this tonight? That family had 80 pounds per week for food but would have had a lot more if 5 of them gave up cigarettes.

And what's that pish got to do with the grand Old Duchess of York?

I was shocked to hear from colleagues that a 13 year old boy was puffing away with the blessing of his parents. This is abuse. They should be charged with a criminal offence.

The money spent on his cigs could have bought him some fruit and veg and maybe some decent clothes.

I saw the programme last night and it seems her visit had an impact (on this particular family)

Yes, i saw it last night and I must say that it was heart-warming to see the family turning their lives around. However, I was horrified to see the condition they'd got themselves into. The mother had no teeth! How does that happen in this day and age? The father looked about 70 at least. Still, let's hope their new diet and fitness campaign improves their lot.

I could not help thinking though - would a Duchess visit a wealthy family living in a mansion if they were doing the same harm to themselvews through a terrible diet, smoking and lack of exercise?  Or is it just the poor on run down estates that need to be held up to the nation as a bunch of no-hopers?

I think this family were victims of poverty of choice.  The Duchess made them aware that there were other things out there, not just junk food and sitting down.

I think rather like global warming, Britain is as it is.  You can reuse a few carrier bags and send a few lesser royals to impoverished families but in the long run, you have to let nature takes its course.  Peterborough WILL be on the coast by 2100 - what of the families in the UK?  Who knows?
