Drepressing news
« on: January 18, 2008, 05:25:37 pm »
I was feeling a bit flat yesterday so I turned on the radio hoping there'd be an afternoon play on to cheer me up. I caught the four o'clock news headlines that described how a plane had crashed landed at Heathrow. They then went on to report on the Ipswich murder trial and finished off by reporting that one of a gang of three teenagers who kicked a man to death had only been relased on bail a few hours before the horrific crime.

The most 'cheerful' bit of news was the report that there could well be more flooding in areas badly hit by floods during the summer.

Unhappy  After that, stripping the beds didn't seem so bad and I couldn't wait to start the ironing!

Aw cheer up! At least the plane crash didn't seriously injure anyone.

And as people were at great pains to point out, although the PM was there waiting to take off, his plane was not invilved in the crash in any way, so that's something else to be grateful for. Confused

Yes, but it wasn't a good time to start playing Ebony Eyes (Everly Bros). Wink

You might dislike Gordon Brown, but the Prime Minister being killed in a plane crash would through this country into crisis. So I do think the fact that he was at Heathrow when a major incident was narrowly averted is pretty significant.

Thanks - sorry to seem picky - wasn't sure if it was a typo or if I had completely misunderstood!!

I don't really dislike Gordon Brown, I don't even know the man, but I don't think he's doing a very good job, and I am well aware of what the death of a PM would do to this country.
My problem was that on a 10 minute section of news about a plane crash, the fact that the PM was there waiting to take off, that his plane was not involved and that he had 'safely taken off' was mentioned about a dozen times.

I 'get' how important he is to the country, but it seemed that his presence was given more importance than the actual crash!

That seemed wrong to me.

That's all.

Which is of course just the way in which our utterly cynical media manipulate the headlines.  Consider the facts: plane crash lands at Heathrow, PM is at same airport. Cut the crap, just make your own mind up.  Easy really.

The news report I heard at 4pm didn't mention Gordon Brown being at the airport at all.

No, I never heard a mention of it either. And while his safety and movements alone certainly shouldn't be the only concern, his presence there - flying to the same destination the plane had come from - was an interesting aspect of a big story. If there had been massive loss of life, or even significant injuries, it would have been different story. But there wasn't, and the story became 'crisis averted'.

And what of the release on bail of the murderer?  This was the third time he'd been released on bail after violent crimes.  Is our judicial system so inept that it can't keep those behind bars who would shatter our civility?

Where were the police when these youths were vandalising the cars?  What measures need to be put in place to protect honest, law abiding citizens from these Barbarians?

Let's build as many new prisons as it takes. Let's fill them with these morons and make our streets safe again.  Is it too much to ask to go out at night and not worry about being accosted, called names or spat at?

The people who build bus shelters near me have given up replacing the lovely glass ones that are smashed night after night, so they have been replaced by ugly green, corrugated iron ones.  It's a depressing state of affairs.

Give these louts 20 lashes of the cat-o-nine tails and let their friends watch.  When the skin is hanging off in ribbons and they are pissing themselves with the pain, they will think twice about reoffending.

But no, the judicial system will shuffle on with it's good intentions and more innocent people will die.

BBC news 24 couldn't mention it enough, and the details of his narrow escape were scrolled across the bottom of the screen constantly.
