How much do you pay for a bottle of wine?

Wine, we know, gets better with age - but now it appears it tastes better the more it costs.

Researchers at the California Institute of Technology have shown that a person's enjoyment of wine can be heightened if they are simply told that it is an expensive one.

How much do you pay for a bottle of wine? I have no idea about wine and so when I buy I always think if it's too cheap it will be vile and I wouldn't want to pay a lot to find I don't like it so I usually go for anything that is between 5 and 7 pounds. If you have any good tips on buying wine then please share.

I tend to avoid anything less than 4 as it tends to be a bit naff, but you can get some excellent ones for around 5.50-6. 

Lou, if you like white, have a go at a New Zealand Chardonnay.  If you like red try a Chilean Cabernet Sauvignon or a South African Shiraz (or Syrah).

I look for special offers on good labels and buy it in when it's cheaper. I go for the 5 - 8 range for the reasons stated above.

My partner is a wine advisor with a company who sells wine so we pay very little for it. Actually neither of us drink much wine although we do like champagne on special occasions. We do give a lot of wine as gifts though!

I do the same as Oldspice - I'm not a great wine drinker but when I see a fairly decent one on special offer I buy a couple of bottles.  Somerfield had a good offer on Pinot Grigot recently - something like 2.99 instead of 5.99.

I'm not that keen on wine, and I'm not surprised to hear that people enjoy it more if they think it's expensive. It's snobbery really isn't it? Remember that blind taste test when Tesco champagne was voted the best? I bet half the people involved were horrified when they realised - and they probably still buy something twice the price.

I'd tell the difference between a New Zealand Chardonnay and a bottle of Liebfraumilch any day.

For red wine I would drink Bordeaux. I wouldn't pay any less than say.. approximately 10 - 15 for a good Bordeaux, and a bad Bordeaux isn't worth shining your shoes with!

For white wine you can't beat Chardonnay, and if you pay about the same price for it as the Bordeaux you'll get an excellent one. I use slightly cheaper ones to make jelly with in the summer. (I use it obviously instead of the water.)

You don't have to pay 35 -40 for a bottle of wine, but don't go for the 1.99 bottles from Tesco. You'll regret it.

Unless of course you really WANT to strip the top layer of enamel from your teeth.

 

It is good for putting on your chips.

I can't drink white wine as for some reason even the smallest amount makes me violently sick.  It wasn't always this way, it's something that's developed over the past 5ish years or so.

I have noticed over the past couple of years or so that I'm also becoming intolerant to certain red wines.  Very strange indeed.

 

Anyway to go back to the original question, unless you are a wine buff and really know what you are tasting for, I would say wine preference is a matter of taste.  I know many people who prefer cheap branded wines and detest more expensive 'posh wines'.  I also know many knowledgable wine fanatics that will not touch anything which costs under a tenner.  I've always loved a good Beaujolais.  Don't care what the experts think

I don't drink wine often. Mostly on special occasions. So I would normally spend a good amount on a bottle that I know I enjoy.

I mean you don't want to be cheap on a special occasion do you?

And of course you don't want to risk looking cheap on someone else's special occasion either.

Migraines can be awful. I get them when I eat too much cheese.

The last party I had people were raving about the wine. They'd never seen it before and all wanted to know where I got it. I told them it was from a shop near my office. I didn't tell them that shop was Home Bargains, and not one bottle cost more than three pounds.
