A 200,000 study into what happens when people hear birdsong is taking off.

Researchers at Aberdeen University will spend two years listening to birds to find out how their songs, calls and cries become a part of people's lives.

"Listening to birds: an anthropological approach to bird sounds" has received funding from the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC).

The team is keen to hear from anyone interested in birds from across Britain and throughout the world.

Researchers from the Department of Anthropology will be carrying out the study.

Thanks Lou.  This is interesting.  I can see a flaw in their research though. The only thing that birdwatchers do when they hear a bird song is identify it. Very few species evoke any deeper feelings. One of these exceptions is the Nightingale. Non-birdwatchers who will being hearing birds in a more abstract way will probably be able to contribute to the survey better. But if asked what species, of course - they wont know.

There's funding for this? Why not just set fire to the money and see how people react to that - it's equally as pointless.

It's as pointless as the lottery donating money for  Bangladeshi women living in the north east to have guitar lessons but it happened.  Maybe we should have  a new thread titled 'most pointless waste of cash' then i could add richard branson to it for donating to the madelines parents are innocent fund.

I love the sound of a robin singing.

I think the most pointless waste of cash is buying and smoking cigarettes.

When I was at the Eden project last week, most visitors didn't believe the birdsong was real, they thought it was coming from a loudspeaker somewhere (it definitely IS real!)
