Sad Songs
« on: March 10, 2007, 09:05:12 am »
Well, we've had happy songs - here's my list of sad songs, most of which I cannot listen to because they are all associated with very unhappy times:

Without You (Nilson - all other versions are terrible)

Goodbye to Love - The Carpenters

Alone Again (Naturally) - Gilbert O'Sullivan

Seventeen - Janis Ian

So Sad To Watch Good Love Go Bad - The Everly Bros

Nothing Compares To You - Sinead

Yesterday - The Beatles

Passing Strangers - Billy Eckstine & Sarah Vaughan
Old but spicey!

'Soon as my heart breaks' - Taylor Dayne
'Again' - Janet Jackson

'Sweeter for me' - Joan Baez

There are loads more which will come to me later.
Who needs karma when you know you're great already?

There are lots of songs and pieces of music which make me cry, but not because they make me sad. It's difficult to explain because these songs have a significance or are linked to a memory which makes me feel positive / uplifted as opposed to sad. Some examples include:

Barber's adagio for strings

Abide with me

Jerusalem

Proud by Heather Small

Champagne supernova by Oasis

Dignity by Deacon blue

Yellow submarine by the Beatles

Dear Prudence by the Beatles

All Things Bright and Beautiful. For my nana.

I'm Forever Blowing Bubbles for my gramps.

Both these wonderful people passed away and these songs remind me of them, both happy times and how much I miss them, so it's a bit of a mixed bag.Smile

Is that an ironic post or a real nomination? I mean, personally, I'd be very happy to hear her sing Time to Say Goodbye.

I agree with Cherry about all of her songs except the Oasis and Beatles ones. If I had to pick a beatles number that moves me it would probably be She is leaving.

Proud by Heather Small does it everytime for me. When my eldest boy left primary school they made a video of the leavers featuring the kids and teachers dancing to that song. it was very personal as it is a small village school and only about 13 were leaving. It made me cry at the time and does when I watch it everytime! It represented going off into the world becoming the best person you can be.

Another song that always touches me is a song by Phil Collins from Face value. (Oh I know, it's probably uncool to like Phil Collins, but what can I say?!?!)

You Know What I Mean.

Just as I thought I'd make it
You walk back into my life
Just like you never left

Just as I'd learned to be lonely
You call up to tell me
You're not sure if you're ready
But ready or not, you'll take what you've got and leave

Leave me alone with my heart
I'm putting the pieces back together again
Just leave, leave me alone with my dreams
I can do without you, know what I mean...

I wish I could write a love song,
To show you the way I feel
Seems you don't like to listen
Oh but like it or not, take what you've got and leave

Leave me alone with my heart
It's broken in two and I'm not thinking too straight
Just leave, leave me alone with my dreams
You've taken everything else, you know what I mean

That song was around when I had a painful break up ... and it said it all. Of course I don't feel the same way now... It was a blessing to get shot of the wast of space!!

Another touching song... Father,Son by Peter Gabriel.

Embarrassed I don't know why I cry at Yellow Submarine. Dear Prudence reminds me of my first love (who broke my heart) because it was one of the songs a band was playing at the concert when we met. Champagne Supernova just reminds me of my happiest days at University.

I agree about Father & Son, I didn't think of that one before but it definitely makes me cry.

Another one is Good riddance (time of your life) it reminds me of the olympics when Steve Redgrave won all those gold medals, he's so great.

What about 'How Can You Mend a Broken Heart?' by Al Green.
