I need a new job!
« on: February 24, 2007, 07:01:25 am »

Anyone got any career advice? I'm sat here at 7am dreading going to work :(

I'm a kitchen planner in a busy diy store, and am sales supervisor on the shop floor. I didn't finish my degree (regret that big time)  and need a salary that can cover my mortgage and bills. Had some health issues in early 20s (am now 28) which = gaps on CV :(

Am interested in health and fitness / drug & alcohol related problems. But - don't know what i want to do. I want someone to come and offer me the dream job for about 20k! Thought about applying to the police which has always been at the back of my mind, but don't know if i've got the confidence to do it.

Oh - ignore me - i'm just in a confused bubble!

Firstly

Secondly have a big bar of chocolate

Thirdly get the newspaper on jobs night and apply for as many as you think you can reasonably do.

Out of interest, where do you live? I know one or two kitchen planners.

Just in case you're Lucy from Homebase in Nottingham, I have a job you can do!

If you are a kitchen planner you must be quite creative. You are also interested in health and fitness and would like to hlep people with problems. I think the perfect job for you would be as an Occupational Therapist.

Bear in mind that a career in the police would mean more time off training, and the starting salary is very low. But if there's something you really want to do, maybe it would be worth a few years of lower earnings to get where you want to be long term?
Who needs karma when you know you're great already?

Thank you guys.  You know - after i posted i kind of realised it was totally unrelated to chocolate and might have pi**ed you off!

Omigod - i've been thinking about OT, but got a mortgage and don't know if i can afford to go back to uni.

I'm in Coventry - so i'm not Lucy from Homebase

Exercise bikes in kitchens? Good idea - cycle while you stir

That's the whole point of the General section - for items unrelated to chocolate I mean - not to p*** us off!

It's not too late to take a big jump although it feels very scary!

A girl I went to Uni with was in a similar position to you. She got her degree, became a manager in a physiotherapist's office and hated the desk job but because interested in the therapy side of it. She left her job last year and is now back at Uni doing speech and language therapy.

If you are serious about joining the Police you shoud see a careers advisor ... you will probably need some guidance when filling in the application. Lots of people get rejected a few times before they get in so it is worth seeking help.

Good luck with whatever you decide

Apparently nurses are getting clobbered by patients with very little justice or support.  Poor nurses, I want to give them a big hug.  Apart from the male ones, who get a thumbs up.
