When did people start to say yay! instead of yes!? I first heard it on 'Smells like teen spirit' by Nirvana, which is early 90's.

My sister says 'yay' a lot, I think she picked it up from watching Friends.

Hey is American (but then again so is hi I suppose...) I never say it; it sounds rude to me.

The scandinavians say Hey hey as a greeting, particularly the Finns and Swedes!

A lot of people say 'aye'.

Here we get 'aye up!'.

It's very common both in the North and the East Midlands.
