Siesta time
« Reply #15 on: February 16, 2007, 09:12:31 am »

Some of my working days are very long. It is not unsusual for me to start at 8am and work through until 9pm. When this happens i am always too tired to eat when I get home but equally I am too 'wired' to sleep right away and have to wind down until about 11.15pm before i can go to bed.

On a normal working day I work from 8am until about 5. I often feel as if I need a nap about 2pm but would not look good nodding off during a lecture or a class!

Power napping is supposed to increase efficiency as well as be beneficial to health so it would be a good idea for work places to think about ways they can help employees relax for a short time during the working day.

Old but spicey!

I am not disputing this but I think a lot of people would prefer to work through and leave work earlier. Where I work we are supposed to have an hour for lunch but only one person I know actually takes it!

That's so true! No one in our office takes an hour for lunch. If we are lucky we have a sandwich at our desks with lots of interruptions

Most of the jobs I've had have been like that, so I'm still amazed when I have colleagues now who moan like mad if they don't get a 15 minute complete break morning and afternoon (in addition to their one hour for lunch).

I always make sure I take my full hour now - and to be fair, the company I work for are pretty good about things like that. I don't have official morning and afternoon breaks, but that doesn't really bother me, as it means I can go and get a drink when I want to without clock-watching.

My colleagues maintain there's some rule that you're legally required to have a 15 minute break when you're serving the public but I think that's only after about five hours or so, not three as they seem to think.

I'm not sure about that, but I think you're entitled to 10 minutes per hour if you work with a VDU - but that includes your lunch break.

If the pay is good then yes. I might do a course in touch-typing as that can sometimes pay well.

Really?  I wish.  I was the fastest in the south of England at one time.

I'm sure it's better paid than standard office work?

A shame it doesn't say why. I only ever have a siesta when I go to bed late and get up early.

Perhaps it is as simple as...... if you are asleep in the afternoon you are not sitting on your bum in front of the telly snacking on the high fat, high sugar foods that cause all these heart attacks and strokes?

Matalan. After that I refuse to work with the public ever again. Horrible company who treat their employees like sh*t.
