It was part of his image change. He lost loads of weight on Gillian McKeith's diet, grew his hair and beard and changed the spelling of his name. Apparently 'Brian' is the Irish spelling

It was because Brian was his real name - Louis Walsh told him it would be quicker to write 'Bryan' when signing autographs as you don't have to take your pen off the page to dot the 'i'!
