100% Chocolate
« on: January 05, 2007, 01:32:42 pm »

Has anyone here ever tasted 100% cocoa chocolate before?  I noticed that the Hotel Chocolat was doing a bar so I thought I would give it a go.  This stuff is one of the most vile thing I've ever tasted and I now understand why they add a bit of sugar!

Can anyone here stomach it?

Not for me! I know it's a bit lightweight, but I'm a milk choccy girl!

I'm a bit hardcore when it comes to chocolate and I die for 70% plus, but 100% was just a bit too much.  I made a mousse with it!

100% seems really extreme, perhaps those on seventypercent.co.uk would be more keen?

There are some very good 70-75% products out there that are really smooth and have wonderful flavour but it's very much an aquired taste a lot of the time. I don't like the more bitter products (Lindt 70% excellence) but a good bar of Valrhona is worth the money.

Wouldn't 100% literally be crumbs and dust? What binds it together?

I have been into Hotel Chocolat today and they had it on sale.  The assistant said it is a very acquired taste and leaves a very strong after taste.  It's not for me even as a choc purist.  HC do several very good high octane chocs around 60-70%.  Just up the road though Chocolate Utopias, 80% bar is absolutely superb as they add a dash of cream, so you get the choccy hit but without any of the bitterness.

Usually I am a 'darker the better' girl, but 100% is definitely too much of a good thing..

I'm a big fan of the Hotel Chocolat Purist range, especially the Ganaches!  Slurp!  Also, they have a 62% milk chocolate bar that is to die for.  Check out all their Rabot Estate stuff.

I have no idea how that 100% bar stayed together, but it made a great mousse when mixed with sugar and some raspberry yogurt!

OK, so I'm into Hotel Chocolat's 100% Macho hot choccy now.  It's lovely and definitely much better than the bar, which has a waxy texture.  I'm surprised at how nice the hot choccy is really.
