BBFC and film certificates

I took my girlfriend to see 'Closer' last night starring Julia Roberts and Jude Law.  A good film about sex, life and relationships.  It's quite a powerful film and has been given a 15 certificate.  I really can't understand this as although there's no sex as such and no violence.  The sexual references and language is gratuitous, explicit and graphic.  I cannot see that it was in any way suitable for a 15 year old and probably wouldn't even interest anyone under 21 anyway. Does someone know how the BBFC work these certs out?

I am 20 years of age and I have seen the film.

As far as I know 15 is the highest rating except for X

There is no such rating as X anymore.
The ratings now are U, PG, 12A, 15, 18 and 18R.

It used to be U, 12, A, AA, X and along time ago XX.

U has always meant anyone and their Granny can go.  PG is a new one meaning that anyone of any age can go but under 12s must be accompamied by an adult.  12A means anyone can go but 12-14 year olds are accompanied by an adult.  15 means you have to be 15 and 18 likewise.  18R is for especially explicit sexual films sold in lisenced sex shops and doesn't generally apply to cinemas.

I'm sorry, but my granny can't go. She's been dead since 1946!!

Lisenced?  That's a new one!  Perhaps there should be a new Chav rating.
