Office jargon
« on: December 16, 2006, 02:51:30 pm »

This was mentioned a while back with all these stupid sayings like pushing the envelope and thinking outside of the box but I have a few more for you:

Run it up the flagpole: To take a new idea, present it to others to gauge reaction.

Singing from the same hymn sheet: To think and operate in the same way as colleagues to take a plan of action forward.

Get our ducks in a row: To take time to focus on the organisational needs of a business and create a more structured aproach for taking it forward.

Low hanging fruit: The most obvious and easy to convert customers.

Joined up thinking: To look at how separate elements can affect each other, rather than viewing an element in isolation.

Ramp up: To increase activity within a specific area of a business over a period of time.

I've heard several of those and they all drive me mad. Another one that gets me is referring to the end of the day as 'close of play' - as if we've all been at a big jolly cricket match instead of working!

Halo effect: To use past experiences to inform and influence future decisions.

Hot desking: To introduce a flexible system whereby a group of employees move around within a section of unassigned desks.

Bobble heading: To join colleagues in a mass nodding of heads prompted by nonsensical comments made by a senior member of staff.

We have hot desking too.

And we 'cascade' when we've been to a meeting.

Old but spicey!

We cascade and roll out.  I love the bobble heading though - it's a new one on me and we have to do a lot of it.

My ex-boss used to ask us to have a 'brain dump'. Quite appropriate really, considering she was full of sh*t.
