Elton wants to ban religion
« on: November 16, 2006, 03:13:02 pm »

Sir Elton John has blasted the religions of the world, claiming followers are encouraged to hate gays.

The veteran singer/songwriter, who married his longtime partner David Furnish in a civil ceremony last December, claims organized religion only works to chastise homosexuality and convince people it's wrong.

He says, "I think religion has always tried to turn hatred towards gay people. Religion promotes the hatred and spite against gays.

"I would ban religion completely. Organized religion doesn't seem to work.

"It turns people into really hateful lemmings and it's not really compassionate."

Nice idea Elton but it might be nice if you gave some thought as to HOW a ban on religion would be imposed.

I'm with Karl Marx - it's the opium of the masses.

But if you ban religion, wouldn't that make people even more against homosexuality?

I think the best solution is for people to be properly informed and open minded about all things in life.

I have had strong Christian belief in the past but I did not trouble myself worrying about what gays were doing. I was more concerned with poverty and war and things that really matter. If there is a God and he made us all equal then he made homosexuals the way they are, the way he intended them to be - gay.

Controversal this one  Its easy blaming it all on religion isnt it.  I agree with some of what old spice says as a christian i think the act of homosexuality is wrong but i dont go round outcasting people i also think other things are wrong but i dont go round shouting or bullying people i am far from perfect myself.  Actually the bible teaches against hate but to love one another you cant sterotype people just because of some small minded individuals.  Ahh glad i got that off my chest this is my opinion anyway.

That's why I hate Christianity. So-called Christians bang on about love and forgiveness - but only if you're sleeping with who they think you should be sleeping with? It's all a crock.

Well not all Christians think that way. As I explained, when I was a practising Christian, I did not hold the view that homosexuality is wrong. Also, there is a strong Gay Christian Movement.

There is never any excuse for bullying someone and I don't think anyone here is laughing at your Christian beliefs. I have already said I used to hold stong Christian beliefs myself.

Why on earth would being a Nazi be okay?

Yes, you're entitled to your beliefs - it's just my belief that they make you evil.

It's not because you didn't agree with Elton - I don't totally agree with him. But you can't deny that you expressed certain beliefs based on your religion, yet at the same time said this bigotry can't be blamed on religion.

If Elton got his wish and religion was banned, there would be a lot of scared people who suddenly had to take responsibility for their own lives.
