Over the last two days I've noticed loads of fireworks going off. I looked out of my window and saw one young lad light one and then throw it under a car. No doubt loads of people will get killed or be in hospital with severe burns this year.

They should be banned from public sale, why aren't they?

The use of fireworks and their sale so far before Bonfire night is a symptom of the decay in society generally.  When I was a child I used fireworks carefully and respectfully. If Bonfire night fell on a Sunday we would let them off on the Saturday or if it was a raining on the Monday.  But nowadays no one has respect for anyone else.  The other night someone was letting them off at gone midnight.

you cant ban fireworks! what about the responsible people like myself... why should we suffer just for the morons? (having said that, i say they'll be banned within the next decade.)

Exactly - it's the same with 24-hour drinking. Of course there will be some irresponsible people who can't handle it; why should that mean the rest of us should let the government decide we can't have a pint at five past eleven?

Who needs karma when you know you're great already?

Last night's fireworks were probably due to Eid. Yesterday was Eid, marking the end of Ramadan.

On Friday and Saturday it was Duwalli, a Hindu festival of which fireworks play a part.

Old but spicey!

In Australia and parts of the US, fireworks have been banned from public sale for years.

What about the public smoking ban? And the junk food advert ban? If these things can be banned (which don't kill people) then why not fireworks?

What I'm getting at is that they should only be available for private parties and displays and so on. Anyway, fireworks you buy from shops are usually crap.

I do see your point, and I know you weren't suggesting they were banned altogether. I suppose what I'm getting at is that people don't have to buy fireworks, and most people let them off in their own gardens. With smoking, you don't get the choice about other people blowing it in your face in pubs etc. and potentially causing you damage through passive smoking. That's why I support the ban.

i think there's too mcuh 'banning' going on these days. gollywogs, electric hand-buzzers, alcoholic coke (ish), gas-powered airguns... fireworks WILL be one of the next to go. and it's just all so sad. bring back the 1970's/80's! everything was legal and political correctness didn't exist.

and i dont want to go to organised firework displays! i want to buy them myself and let them off myself in my own back garden for my kids, like my family did for me when i was a nipper. (not that i have any kids of my own, exactly - but you get the point.)

Oh I do agree, as a kid I used to love it when we had our own bonfire and fireworks. What I'm against are these horrible chavs who get fireworks and do stupid things with them.

I bought one of those firework 'cakes' that you just light once and it puts on a display for you - £6.99 and it does 70 or 80 so that seemed good value to me.  I bought it for my son's 18th last week but it has poured with rain every night ever since so we're still waiting to light the thing....watch this space!

oh, absolutely. theres always some pricks who want to strap them to their neighbours poodle... or some half-witted parent who lets little Timmy blow all the fingers off his right hand every year.

A case in point this where utilitarian measures are called for.  Either you ban them to keep everyone safe or you introduce strict penalties, and I mean really Draconian ones for anyone found letting them off before a certain date and/or misusing them.  Obviously Eid, Chinese New Year and Divali etc would be exempt (date wise that is).
