WHY OH WHY DO THESE BIG COMPANIES HAVE THE URGE TO DICONTINUE PRODUCTS. THEIR EXCUSE IS THAT THEY AREN'T POPULAR SELLERS HOWEVER THATS A MYTH, THE REAL REASON IS THEY BELIEVE THAT THROUGH THE DECADES WE WANT MORE UPMARKET ITEMS AND THAT OUR TASTES HAVE IMPROVED. WELL I CAN'T THINK OF ANYTHING NEW BROUGHT TO THE MARKET THAT I REALLY ACTUALLY LIKE. ONLY HOPE IS THE NEW CADBURYS DARK CHOC FLAKE THAT IS LAUNCHED ON SATURDAY. HOWEVER I AM SICK AND TIRED OF THESE COMPANIES DECIDING WHAT I LIKE TO EAT, SO I URGE YOU TO CONTACT ALL THE COMPANIES CONCERNED TO COMPLAIN AND MAYBE WE WILL SEE OUR FAVOURITES IN THE SHOPS ONCE AGAIN.I WAS SO EXCITED WHEN THE TEXAN BAR WAS RELAUNCHED AND IT SEEMS SO WERE THOUSANDS OF OTHERS, OUT OF A GROUP QUESTIONED OF 17,000, 58% VOTED TEXAN THEIR ALL TIME FAVOURITE. SO THEY RELAUNCHED IT FOR 6 WEEKS AND THEN IT VANISHED. I SEEMS NEVER TO BE LAUNCHED AGAIN, I CONTACTED NESTLE TO ASK WHY THIS IS THEIR RESPONSE:

Thank you for your recent email.

We are sorry to inform you that Texan bar was withdrawn from our range due to the high cost of production and the relatively low level of sales.  We would like to assure you that the decision to withdraw any product is reached only with great reluctance and we regret any disappointment this product's absence has caused you.

Thank you once again for taking the trouble to contact us and for the interest you have shown in our Company.

Kind regards

Vince Mercer

SO IF YOU WANT IT RELAUNCHED THIS IS THE MAN TO COMPLAIN TO.WHO ALSO REMEMBERS BOOST THE COCONUT ONE, OLD JAMACIA, REVELS WITH THE COCONUT ONE IN IT(WHAT'S THE RAISIEN ONE ABOUT), TREATS, SAINSBURYS USED TO DO THE BEST BELGIAN DARK CHOCOLATE SPREAD FAB FROM THE POT + REPLACED IT WITH A NUTELLA ONE, WHY! ALSO TUTTI FRUTTIS AND SPANGLES.

HOW ABOUT FERRERO ROCHE THE MINT ONE, NOONE EVER KNOWS WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT IT WAS PLAIN CHOCOLATE AND INSIDE WAS MINT LIQUID. THEY WERE THE BEST. IN THE ADVERT THE WOMEN BIT INTO IT AND HER EYES TURNED GREEN.

AS FOR CRISPS WHERE OH WHERE DID THE SMITHS SQUARE CRISPS IN BEEF(BOVRIL) GO TO. I KNOW WALKERS BOUGHT UP THE COMPANY BUT MUST HAVE DISCONTINUED THEM JUST LIKE THEY DID THE YELLOW PACKET OF BEEF MONSTER MUNCH 80'S-90'S ERA (CHUNKS OF BEEF) NOW TO ADD INSULT TO INJURY DID YOU REALISE THEY HAVE ALSO DISCONTINUED TO MY HORROR BEEF AND ONION AND REPLACED THEM WITH STEAK AND ONION. I HAVE EXPLAINED THEY ARE NOT THE SAME, THE BBQ HAVE BEEN REPLACED BY BBQ RIB AGAIN NOT THE SAME. THE ONLY CRISPS THAT ARE STILL AROUND LIKE THESE ARE BEEF DISCOS BUT HOW LONG B4 THESE ARE IN THE GRAVEYARD.

SO IF YOU WANT THESE BACK ON OUR SHELVES THE ONLY WAY TO GET THESE AND ANY OTHERS IS TO COMPLAIN TO THE COMPANY CONCERNED. IF WE ALL DO IT TOGETHER THE SHOPS MAY START SELLING WHAT WE WANT. NOT WHAT THE FOCUS GROUP OF TASTE TESTERS TELL US WE WANT.

GET COMPLAINING

These were lovely. You make some valid points Pickle, and that is what this forum is all about.

You know this for a fact do you? You spend millions on market research and sales analysis every year in the same way confectionery manufacturers do? Why do you think they stop making these products - just to annoy you? To be mean?

There a lots of old products I miss, some of which you mention. At times I do think the manufacturers are a little short-sighted; for example, Fry's Five Centres is the most asked about old product on Cadbury's website, suggesting there is a demand for the product. But the truth is that just because you, I or anyone else on this forum likes the Texan or the Pyramint, it doesn't mean that it's a good seller for the company, or that the sales justify the cost of production. Sorry, but there it is. And think of it like this - these companies don't have an infinite amount of money set aside for development. To introduce new products, it follows that some older ones have to be discontinued. They can't simply keep producing absolutely everything they ever developed just because Mrs Whittaker of Winchester preferred original Cheese and Onion to Cheddar and Red Onion and might get a bit upset. If companies stopped producing new products there would be dozens of people complaining about that too!

Aww Smurfy, it's only natural for people of a certain age to start wishing everything would return to the way it was twenty years ago. I think that's what this thread is all about. Wishing our favourite bars would come back and exchanging memories about them.

There are plenty of bars I would like to see back, but come on, parts of that rant were just absurd. Pickle seems to be saying no chocolate bar, brand of sweets or snack should have ever been discontinued! You just have to accept that sometimes the bars you love weren't loved by enough people. It's simply not feasible for companies to produce an infinite range.

I accept that bars will disappear but I reserve the right to moan when it happens.

I can't beleive these were not popular. I think sometimes the product is just too ambitious and the cost of production is too high in relation to sales.

Exactly what I was saying. Case in point - back in the mid eighties Woolworths had two large stores in central Birmingham. Both were making a profit; however, neither was making enough profit to justify their square footage. Hence both stores closed. Ok, they should probably have just closed one store, but the point is a small amount of profit doesn't necessarily justify the time spent on development and production.

Don't get me wrong, I get upset when nice bars disappear, but I also understand things change - otherwise the only bars we would have would be Fry's Chocolate Cream and Dairy Milk.

You would like Hotel Chocolat Oldspice - they had big boxes of rose and violet creams when I went.
