What do we pay our licence fee for?
« on: September 21, 2006, 08:46:45 pm »

So ITV think it's entertaining to shoot someone with a shotgun on prime time TV.  Well not in this house.  I hope they will screen a live lesbian sex orgy to compensate for this outrageous incident.

Of course they wont, because in our sick televisual world violence is cool and sex is dirty.  I want my licence fee back.

ITV is free. like 623 said it is for the BBC that we are charged a licence fee that is why ITV has those comercials and BBC doesn't!

What your licence provides
The BBC is paid for directly through each household TV licence. This allows it to run a wide range of popular public services for everyone, free of adverts and independent of advertisers, shareholders or political interests. 94.3% of the UK population used the BBC every month in 2005/2006.

The BBC provides 8 interactive TV channels, 10 radio networks, over 50 local TV and radio services and bbc.co.uk (see BBC channels). In January 2006 we launched BBC jam, a free online learning service for 5 to 16 year olds, linked to key areas of the school curriculum..

BBC World Service is funded by Government grant and not your TV licence. Profits from separate BBC commercial services help to keep the licence fee low.

I wont take it back, you're all talking twaddle.

If ITV was free I would be able to watch it without a TV licence.  If anything, in real terms ITV costs more than the BBC. The cost of prime time advertising is so high it has a significant impact on the prices of goods.  How much do you think a thirty second advert at 8pm costs?  About £250,000 for 30 seconds.  Free?  I don't think so. You pay for it every time you go to Tesco, Sainsbury's etc...

ITV is NOTHING to do with the licence fee. The licence fee pays for the BBC and no other channels!!!

I can see sense in your argument - i.e. that you should be able to watch ITV without having to pay the licence fee, as it isn't funded by it. But to complain about the quality of ITV programmes in relation to the licence fee is ridiculous. You could halve or double the licence fee and it wouldn't affect ITV shows in any way!!!! GET A BRAIN.

And it's twerp, not twirp.
