I'm English, and proud to be English. Mainly because the majority of people here are nice and kind.
I don't think about myself as British as I don't particularly want to be lumped in with the Irish/Welsh/Scottish. As far as I am concerned they want to be 'free' so let them

When I see some of our beautiful countryside and lovely old buildings I am proud to be a custodian but actually being British, like sticking a flag on yourself and being willing to stick one on someone who is not - well I am not proud in that sense.
If you say British, ignoring the tatooed dim-wits, I think of the sense of fairplay and honesty.
Ok so England (and Scotland, Wales and N. Ireland) didn't win the world cup at football, but generally our footballers would be disgusted to use some of the tactics employed by other teams to gain advantage.
Before out unfortunate toadying to the US administration Britain was thought of as being honest and reliable to deal with on the World stage. Yes we have had our dark past too but we have by and large tried to atone for it.
