I never know the difference.  Goldencup is right.  The pored side takes a lot longer to cook than the flat side.

When I buy scotch pancakes I can get them with lemon in or sultanas. Crumpets are thicker with the little holes in like BK describes and pikelets are thinner, like scotch pancakes but a different texture more like a crumpet.
