She apparently has been advised not to speak in public anymore due to a health problem. Why someone didn't advise that in 1979 is beyond me...

I don't generally have any sympathy with the concept of the Pope but when they kept stuffing that poor, sick man into that little window and making him wave to the crowds like some demented nodding dog I thought it was cruel.

It's a strange idea, putting a man in a robe in a huge, wealth-laden palace surrounded by precious jewels, paintings, priceless artifacts and with hundreds of well-paid staff to look after him - and then getting him to pray for the poor.
