If someone asked me for a minced meat pie and chips I would natrually think they meant savoury mince.

I would call deep fried corned beef or spam in batter a fritter. I used to LOVE fritters years ago but wouldn't dare eat them now.

THis could run and run!  regional differences in food and drink are very interesting.


For example, can anyone from 'up north' (say Manchester or nearby) tell me whay a filled roll is a barm cake?


And you know those horrible pickled gherkins they sell in chip shops? Well in certain parts of London, they are called walleys - is this so in any other regions?

We also have pineapple fritters and pea fritters as well as spam. Like Smurfy, I thought a scallop is a shellfish.

I must say having lived in both the West and East Midlands, scallops are definitely far more common in the West Midlands. You can get them in the East but they are a) invariably known as potato fritters or fry-its and b) you have to wait for them to be cooked, whereas any decent chippy over this way has them ready when you go in.
