Beauty and the geek?
« on: April 22, 2006, 07:16:02 pm »

I watched a programme last night called Beauty and the Geek? It was about pretty girls being taught to be clever by brainy geeks? And in return the girls helped the geeks become more sociable? Are you wondering why every sentence in this post in question? It's because that's how all the girls spoke? Ve-ry slo-wl-y as if everything's a question? Why do people do that? Talk as everything's a question even when it isn't? As if they're a bit too stupid to know for sure?

It's called an upward inflection. Some theorists agree with you - that it seems to indicate the speaker is unsure of her/himself and needs confimation by posing everything as a question. Other theorists say it's actually a way of including the listener in the conversation more and providing space and opportunity for a response.

Trust me, these girls are not bright enough to subconciously include a listener in a conversation!

In that case they have spent too many evenings watching and listening to Neighbours and Hone & Away because the upward inflection is particularly characteristic of speech patterns in Australia and New Zealand.

The 'rising terminal' does irritate me too.  If you like Smurfboy, I'll try to find some nice intelligent women for you.  Large or small breasts?

Mine isn't ugly.  I've been told I have a classic knob.

Now, I know for a fact that's not true.  A friend of mine used to be a masseuse and she said you'd be amazed what shapes and sizes there are out there.  She saw hundreds of knobs, so I'd take her opinion above yours Loulou as much as I respect it.

A masseuse who saw knobs? Was she a masseuse or a call girl? My friend is a masseuse and covers the men so she doesn't see anything.
