why do they soften everything?
« on: November 28, 2004, 10:29:59 pm »

ok, i'll start off with Mars Bars. Back in the 80s they were great, nice and chewy, but gradually the softened both the chocolate and the caramel so now they have lost all their chewyness and they are REALLY bland.

Same with Cadbury's Caramel. The caramel was originally nice and chewy, now it is soft and bland and sickly. The chocolate is softer in this too.

Then we have the discontinued Whispa. Originally it was chunkier a nd the chocolate was slightly different - a more cocoa taste I think. Then they flattened it a bit and it was downhill from there. The original Whispa was great.

So why do they soften everything and take the character out of everything?

I recommend that you ask the relevant manufacturers, but they're ever so cagey about these things.  Anybody would think it was a matter of national security.

Yet the softening that was popular in the mid 90s died a death soon afterwards. Remember new 'smoother' Rolos and Cadbury's Caramel? They were quietly dropped.

Did they?

Or did they just stop labelling them that?

I think they dropped them because I'm pretty sure you could briefly get Cadbury's Caramel Original while the smooth was still in production, i.e. as Coca Cola did in America by launching 'Coca Cola Classic' then gradually dropping the disatrous 'New Coke'.
