Inspired by a conversation I was having with GC earlier, and also by the student Oldspice mentioned who thought Devon was in London. Who has come into contact with a dopey tourist - e.g. wanting directions to London from Scotland as if they could walk it?

I once heard these two Americans discussing Wales on a train. One had never heard of it, so his friend helpfully told him 'it's a suburb of Birmingham, it's kinda pretty...'

Another classic was when I was on holiday in Gran Canaria a few years back. One of the reps told me a traveller had asked where she could catch the bus to Tenerife from. Upon being told she would need to catch a boat, not a bus, she became very annoyed, shouting 'well I was told I could catch a bus, so where do I catch it from?', despite being repeatedly told it was a different island!

Many years ago, I was mistaken for a Druid by a dopey American tourist at Stonehenge. There was a queue of us waiting to use the ladies loo but he thought we were waiting outside a 'cleansing chamber' ready to get washed and brushed up for the summer solstice. (At about 10AM!!!)

Old but spicey!

I was asked (on another Forum) for advice on places to visit in England, by an American tourist.  His ship was due to dock in Southampton at noon and his flight from Heathrow was 'not until 4 pm' so he wanted to know if he could take in both Bath and Stonehenge en route. I told him the check-in at Heathrow would be 3 hrs before his flight so he had better get moving.

I was also asked if it would be ok to wear jeans when sightseeing in London!

I was once asked directions to Uttoxeter from Beeston, which is a small suburb of Nottingham.  It's like being asked directions to Maidenhead from St.John's Wood.  Or for 623 and Black Night it's like being asked for directions to Kircaldy from Musselburgh.

In my Cornish hometown a family of tourists pulled over in their car to ask for help. They had just spent 10 minutes travelling across from Devon on the ferry (ie. a chain driven, floating bridge) thinking they were on the car ferry (ie. a big ship) to France.

Two summers ago my great-uncle took the car ferry from Plymouth to Santander. When he got home he told us how he hated the place; he had quite a horrible holiday. He didn't like the locals; he had tried speaking French and nobody would help him and they all 'pretended' they did not understand him. We had to explain to him that Santander is in Spain, not France!

I was attending a large campus-based establishment.

University.  Neither prisons nor Borstals have campuses except maybe the really trendy ones like Smidgborough.
