I can't believe there are people this thick in the world. I am selling an item on eBay starting at £99 (call it £100) and set the reserve at £250. It didn't sell, but someone did bid £99. When he asked if we could reach a compromise I suggest we meet halfway: £175. Read his reply:

I am trying to work out how at a reserve of 250 halfway is 175?.
ALLOWING for me offering 99.99[say 100] and 250 is the reserve, then half way is 125 is it not.

Should I even risk dealing with someone so blatantly stupid? I wouldn't mind so much if he was acting like I was the thick one!!!

The halfway is indeed £175 you are right to be annoyed Smurfboy.  It's like the other day, a woman in a shop had to work out on paper what 3 x £1.99 was.  Is it not obviously £6 - 3p?

Mental arithmetic appears to be a thing of the past, sadly. In a similar example to Bounty's, I once paid for an item costing £1 with four 20p pieces and two tens. The woman behind the counter had to stare at it and count each coin individually before she realised something other than a £1 coin could add up to £1!

I think you're right. One of the things I'm selling is a 3 pack of Glow in the Dark cocktail stirrers. The item title says '3 Pack Glow in the Dark Cocktail Stirrers'. In the text it says 'pack contains three stirrers'. Today I've had my first question on the item, and you've guessed it...

'How many stirrers does the pack contain, because your notes don't make it clear'. Silly me! I should've mentioned it! Obviously 3 pack was too subtle a hint...

It really is shocking how stupid some people are.  I have to work with people who are inumerate, semi literate and have appalling general knowledge.  I don't mean they don't know capital cities (which they don't) but they don't know how many centimetres there are in a metre and stuff like that).

One of my students wrote: Charles Babbage was born in Devon, London in 1791. When I asked him to clarify whether it was Devon or London he said it was both!

"Where is Devon?" I asked him "In or near London?" he replied. I then asked the class "Where is Devon?". Nobody knew. "Where is Cornwall?" Nobody knew. "Where is Dorset???????"  You guessed!

Old but spicey!

Sadly it seems to be the way things are going. Education, despite "record" GCSE passes is clearly inferior to how it used to be. Basics seem to be passed over - spelling and mental arithmetic seem to have suffered the most.
