I was watching one of those 'The 1000 Greatest Number Ones' clips shows the other night (yes, I was that bored) and someone said they thought the Gary Jules version of 'Mad World' was one of the very few cover versions that was better than the original. I can't say I agree on that one, but does anyone else have any suggestions for covers that beat the original?

My top one would be Shirley Bassey's version of 'Something'. A lot of people would say it's sacrilege to say that about a George Harrison/Beatles song, but the original is surprisingly bland. Dame Shirl has the kind of drama to her voice and performance style that the song needs. Any other nominations?

Not wishing to be merely contrary (it's a start), didn't TFF say THEY liked the Gary Jules version better themselves? I actually do like it better as well.

HIM's version of Wicked Game is rather good too.

Not sure; I phone Curt Smith at least twice a week, but he's always got his answering machine on. I'm starting to get suspicious...

'Mad World' was just an example used on a TV show that inspired this thread. The thread isn't a poll on which particular version of that one song you prefer - you can argue for any cover version you think is better than the original.

Ditto. A Christmas number one should reflect the mood of the year. 2003 was the year of The Darkness. Some naff one-hit-wonder shouldn't have taken their place at number one.

Manfred Man's cover version of Just Like A Woman' is far superior to Bob Dylan's own composition as is Jimi Hendrix' All Along The Watchtower'. However, NOBODY can do Blowing In The Wind as good as Dylan.

If we're talking Dylan covers, nobody does them like Joan Baez. In fact no one else interprets other people's songs like she does. My dad was a huge fan of both of them and I loved Joanie's version of 'Simple Twist of Fate' - I was stunned when I heard the original, I thought it was dire!

I have seen Joan live and her voice is simply heavenly. She does, indeed, cover some of Dylan's songs brilliantly.

She also sang a very beautiful song about her relationship with Dylan called Diamonds and Rust.

Old but spicey!

I adore Diamonds and Rust. Sweeter for Me is another autobiographical song that could reduce anyone to tears.

I'm so jealous that you've seen her live Spicy!
