Apparently the government are considering holding a state funeral for the last First World War veteran when he dies.  I think there must only be a handful left.  (The youngest you can be and have fought in WW1 is 102.)  Who thinks this is a nice idea?

I think it would be nicer to do something for them while they are alive, like a big party.

What, congratulations you lived the longest so when you're dead you can have a state funeral? I don't think it's appropriate. The many should be remembered and celebrated not just one because he lived longest.

I agree with Loulou a bit of a bash now while they are alive is more appropriate.  However I think the dignity of a state funeral for THE last one has something going for it too.

Cherry, it wouldn't be necessarily that he lived longest, just that he died last.  Depends how old he was when he joined up.

Yes I understand that. But lots of others who were just as brave died who were not given the same treatment. I think a way of remembering and celebrating the many is more approriate than a state funeral for just one, even if he is the last one.

I think Bounty's right.  The state funeral would be celebrating the many.  It would be symbolic.

I think it's best to do something for people when they are alive so they can enjoy it, not once they are dead.
