That's not right at all. You need a good trade union.

Reasonable paternity leave is a basic right nowadays. i know some small companies cannot afford long periods of paid leave - but if you're a hard-working, flexible employee, there should be some give and take.

That's fair enough! I am lucky because I get eight days off over Christmas, including Christmas Day etc. The downside is that we cannot take our holidays when we like, ie during term time. That means if we are going away, we have to go in peak priced periods. Also, people think we get all of the school holidays off but we don't. As college lecturers, we get a certain number of days annual leave plus Bank Holidays and that leave must be taken when students are not in college but it doesn't cover all the holidays. Often, when the students are on half-term or summer holidays, we are planning courses, doing research, writing reports or even cleaning out cupboards!

Teaching is not half as easy as it looks! One of my friends was a schoolteacher (girls secondary - bet Bounty would have loved that!) and he said it wasn't all it was cracked up to be (pardon any unintentional puns there)

I don't even think it looks easy!  I think teaching in a secondary school, especially one where the majority of kids don't want to learn, must be an absolute nightmare.
