Themed Funerals

Does anyone else find this slightly disturbing?  A 14 year-old girl was killed in a car accident near my home a few weeks ago.  The car was being driven at 80 mph at 2 am by an 18 year-old, who survived.  The instructions for the funeral were that all girls and boys should wear tracksuits and all girls should wear a high, left-sided pony tail.  My son and some of his friends knew the girl and would have attended, but as none of them possess a tracksuit they were unable to.

About 4 weeks ago there was a very high profile accicident down the road from where I live. 3 boys and 2 girls were killed in a car accident. They were driving a stolen car at 1am in the morning. They ranged from 14 - 17 years old and at least 3 were under ASBOs.They were being followed by the police at the time, largely due to the fact that they had just been reported to have knocked a cyclist off his bike.

It is undoubtably a terrible tragedy for such young people to die and in such an awful way, but it seems that the community that these young people lived in want to hold the police responsible for what happened.

There has been a number of vigils held at the site, which happens to be the garden of some poor family unrelated to the dead. Also floral tributes appeared in mass numbers.

There has been a lot of anger directed at the police, and there have been chants of "Pigs are murderers". The Funerals were very reported in detail in the local press, including a shiney metal coffin for one lad who was the "self proclaimed King of Bling".

As I said I find it terrribley sad and can not imagine much worse than the loss of a child, but feel that somewhere the focus of attention was slightly off. These young people had a choice and sadly took the wrong one and ended up paying the horrific price. I know I have talked to my sons about it in depth and hope thhey will never end up making similar poor choices.

I think we should caution against making value judgements about fashion.  Wearing left sided pony tails and baseball caps doesn't make them bad people and are as valid a dress code as top hat and tails.  They are just culturally different.

I of course agree that these were tragic incidents and feel sad that people should drive like this and waste lives so pointlessly.

When did Goldencup make a value judgement?

Who needs karma when you know you're great already?

She said the theme was disturbing, which to me sounds like a value judgement.  A value judgement need not be a bad thing, so there is no need to vicariously jump to her defence.

I like GC so I'm hardly going to slate her.

That doesn't even make sense!

It does make sense.  You were feeling the perceived criticism on her behalf so you vicariously jumped to her defence.

Can I leap to my own defence please?  I was not making a 'value judgement' or calling them bad people - far from it - I just find it strange to have any theme for a funeral.  I would have felt the same whatever the theme was - telling people not to wear black is fair enough if that is what the family want, but refusing to allow people to attend because they don't have the requested clothes I think is a bit much.  My son and his friends knew the girl and would like to have attended but because they are not chavs, they could not.

That's fair enough.  Smufy was only being an arse because he thinks I think he is gay.

Smurfy was not being an arse.  Whether he's gay or not is totally irrelevant.

I think he was.  He assumed that you were not making a value judgement without possibly knowing what you thought.  I didn't say that if he was gay it was relevant any more than me being an extreme heterosexual is relevant, even though I still get constantly rebuked for it.  But I digress.
