Hi!

I know that this topic has been dormant for some time, but I HAVE to speak out.  I am so glad that someone else remembers Cadbury's Sunfruit(s) too.  I was hooked on them during the late 1980s and early 1990s and they were largely responsible for my teenage weight gain.  When my local shop ran out (I lived in a town in Fife at the time), they never received any more and left me devastated.

I actually made a post on the "A Quarter Of..." messageboard about this very subject.  I'll quote it below:

"Does anyone remember a chocolate bar made by Cadbury's called either Sunfruits or Summerfruits? These came out for a short period in the late 1980s or early 1990s (can't remember the exact year). The bar was similar in appearance to a Cadbury's Caramel bar in that it had a chocolate exterior with little "compartments". However, each compartment was filled with a fruity, berry, truffle-like substance. These were responsible for turning me into a tubby teenager with bad skin...nevertheless, I would still smack my granny to taste one again. Nobody I know seems to remember them either - my friends and family think I'm delusional, but I can remember scoffing them two at a time as a youngster. OK, I'm a little unsure of the name, but there has got to be someone else out there who remembers them too."

I am overjoyed that I have been vindicated by Cleverdick and Oldspice.  And I wholeheartedly agree...they were amazing.

Col

Why do people always think you're delusional for remembeing something no one else does?

Hi all,
Here is a copy of yet more email correspondence between myself and Cadbury's.
As you will see, eventually they did own up to making Sunfruts
(my mistake re. name).  But it wasn't until I sent them a scan of the wrapper
I bought on eBay that they believed me!  I'll try and get a picture of it on here
somehow.  The wrapper was, I'm certain, facelifted - I only remember the one with
italic writing, but the colour scheme was the same and is spot on WRT my description.
Let's all email Cadbury's!  If everyone on here did that, then it might stand a chance!

Hello Richard

We have no more details I'm afraid - its not on any of my
databases that we
have available and we don't seem to have done any research work
on the
product. It was obviously very short lived.

Sorry we are unable to help further with this.

Hi Audrey,

Thanks - but could you tell me what year it was discontinued,
and when the
label was modified to the 'italic' typeface?

Of course, I am still very intrigued to know why this product
does not seem

to be widely known about, even at Cadbury's! ;-)

I think it should be reintroduced - but made with plain
chocolate.

Best regards,

Richard

Ah, that's why so many of us had never heard of it. Cadbury regularly used to trial bars regionally.

Sorry to be pessimistic, but if it was never nationally introduced after its trial, I think there's more chance of finding a unicorn in the cupboard under the stairs than it being reintroduced.

I'm not so sure because this Cadbury's Sunfruit bar sounds familiar to me too. The pink and burgandy wrapper particularly ring a bell. And don't forget that Cadburys also denied making Cabana bars!

I know this is ancient news but I just spotted this when rereading the thread. Cadbury deny making Cabanas because Rowntree made them!

Yes, I realised that recently too.

I think it's strange that Cadbury do not have people still working there from 1987. I would have thought a big, old company like Cadbury would have a little old boy in production somewhere (usually a floor sweeper) who remembers everything the company ever made, said and did.

And who keeps their archives? I would not like them looking after national archives. It would be like 1984 where everything they don't want people to remember is wiped from the records!

Old but spicey!

They probably do, but who's going to spend half a day searching a massive site like Bournville for info on a bar that was discontinued 20 years ago and was never even a national release? Poor old Audrey must have enough to do in the day.

It's a shame this didn't make it, it's a bit different to what's around today.

It sounds vile. Blackcurrant is not meant as a chocolate filling. Anyone remember blackcurrant matchmakers? They were truly horrid.
