Matchmakers
« on: September 13, 2005, 09:57:42 pm »

When Matchmakers were launched (it must have been about 1970) they were made by Rowntrees and I am sure they were shorter than they are now. I distinctly remember a long, thin box with three or four sections and match-sized chocolates (that, I suppose, is why they were called Matchmakers).

In those days they came in three flavours: mint, orange and coffee. They seemed the height of luxury and tasted wonderful. I am sure they were about 3 shillings a box (30p) which sounds ridiculous but was a huge amount of money to a child on a few pence pocket money per week.

Old but spicey!

I used to get a sixpence (2.5 pence for the younger
ones among us) for my tuckshop money every day
and that got me a packet of crisps and 2 chocolate
mallows. I got orange Matchsticks in my Christmas
stocking, along with a Terry's Chocolate Orange and
a selection box. My Mum still gets me a Chocolate
Orange at Christmas but she stopped getting me
Matchsticks and a selection box, much to my dismay,
she thinks I should've grown out of them by now. I
have to buy myself a selection box for Christmas.

Yes, Matchmakers were definitely match-sized.  Don't remember coconut ones but have horrific memories of the coffee flavour!
