Winward Island bananas are the best. When I was in the trade, 90% of bananas imported into the Uk came from there. Then, the department of trade said it was unfair to put a levy on non-Winward Island bananas and that made South American bananas more competitive. However, they were controlled by big companies whereas Winward Island bananas (the fruit being the main source of income for the Islands) were produced by small holders and cooperatives. Thus we had the banana wars. I am glad that the case for Fairtrade bananas is being made loud and clear because without the banana trade the people will suffer greatly.
