Walnut Whips
« on: August 24, 2005, 10:12:13 pm »

When I was a kid, these were made by Duncans (later taken over by Mackintoshes I think) and were always called Whipped Cream Walnuts. They were the height of luxury (so were Toblerone bars) and the filling was so dreamy.

They are hardly mentioned these days.

What do others think?

Oldspice do you remember those old ads - "It's like biting the top.....off an Easter egg"

No, I don't remember those, but then I didn't have a TV at home until I moved in with relatives when I was 12. By then I was too bust to watch much TV. What years are we talking about?

Does anyone else, like me, discard the walnut before eating the whip? Does anyone else remember when they started making different flavours such as plain chocolate and coffee flavoured filling?

M&S did some brilliant versions of their own whips including a mint filled one, now sadly not available. Just as well really, i could easily eat a box of three.

I think the cream inside is Beta-Max.

Wasn't that a type of video recorder, vastly superior to VHS ?

Indeed it was.  And yes Oldspice, I too discard the walnut!  I hated the coffee ones and remember occasionally buying one by mistake and having a nasty shock.  The 'biting the top off an Easter egg' tag ran for years - probably throughout the 70's.  When I went to Australia a few years ago it was the one thing I was asked to bring for an ex-pat who loved them, and it took me ages to find any.

That's right. You don't see them about much these days. There used to be a special stand for them divided into flavours. Come to think of it, I haven't eaten a WW for yonks.

Nor me.  And when I last saw them (like everything else) they seemed to have shrunk!

I ahven't had a WW for a long while either. It gets very over looked when I go to buy chocolate.
