X Factor or Proms?
« on: August 20, 2005, 09:06:08 pm »

I managed a bit of both. X Factor is addictive - driven by some people's amazing faith in themselves. Proms is just a delight always.

Whilst changing beds this weekend I have been listening to some real old favourites:

John I'm Only Dancing - David Bowie

Giving It All Away - Roger Daltry

Pearl's a Singer - Elkie Brooks

Jesse - Janis Ian

Handbags and Gladrags - Chris Farlow

And a whole album of Elvis Costello.

The music more than made up for the depressing chore of stripping and re-making beds and dusting the bedrooms.

Old but spicey!

You're nicer to your kids than me Oldspice - mine have to change their own beds and dust their bedrooms!

'John I'm Only Dancing' is one of my all time favourite singles - forgot that one in the recent discussion

I watched the X factor just to see all the lala people who think they can sing.

'John..' was Ok, he wrote far better around the same time.

Isn't Pearls a Singer a Joni Mitchell joint?

Hi robbie - agree that Bowie did some great stuff around that time but John I'm Only Dancing has a fantastic intor and ending and it's one of those records you just HAVE to dance to.

I have only ever heard Elkie Brookes cover Pearl's a Singer. It doesn't sound like anything Joni would do but I'm not all that familiar with all of Joni's songs.

Bethoven's Ninth was divine tonight. It's got to be the proms every time.

Definitely proms for me too.  I've performed in a couple of them years ago and there's always a great atmosphere.  Forgot to answer the actual question before - sorry!

In 1975 or there abouts I was at the last night of the proms up in the "Gods". It was fantastic - like being at Wembly for the FA cup final!

The Proms is completely superior to the X factor.  Culture versus the one minute attention span.  Keep the Proms for nice people who shop at John Lewis.

I see you subcribe to the high culture/low culture school you old Leavisite! I am more of a homogenous type. I like what I like and sometimes a delightful indulgence in TV tripe is just what I need. The great thing about the X factor is the people who are tone deaf and devoid of any entertainment talent what so ever having enough confidence, courage (and probably stupidity) to go before a huge audience and make complete fools of themselves.  It's a tradition that goes back centuries but of course we are now using a different medium from the twon/village square.

I love X-Factor, but my attention span was long enough to get two degrees. Explain that one.
