Gingerbread men
« on: March 12, 2005, 11:23:48 pm »

these never taste very gingery when I get them from Greggs and yesterday I had one with one eye. That could have traumatised me for life if I was 10 yrs younger (well maybe 30 yrs younger).

Anyway I remember gingerbread men when they had currants for eyes not smarties and they had atleast three currant buttons down the front .Now there's no buttons so I have to assume my gingerbread man is naked. It's all got way too out of hand and I need to complain to someone. I might set up the RSPGM.

Can we still call them gingerbread men? Is that politically correct. Are they not gingerbread people?

Greggs had some gingerbread bunnies with chocolate tails but I am waiting until Easter to buy one.

Right, let's start a campaign to save the traditional gingerbread 'man'.  I shall do some research on the subject.  Haven't bought one for ages as I don't like ginger but my kids used to love them when they were little.

I agree - naked gingerbread men are a disgrace.

You used to be able to get gingerbread women too, but their sticky-out skirts are just so over. I think someone should design one with a nice A-line retro print and some knee high boots.

When I was little they were called gingerbread men and I always thought that was fine. Starbucks do a gingerbread bunny. Might have one next time I am in there.

At lunchtime I asked at my local baker's shop why they use Smarties for eyes and buttons  They said that chocolate is more popular especially with children who won't buy the version with currants.

It seems very difficult to get kids to eat fruit and veg these days (just look at some of the attitude in 'Jamie's School Dinners')

Think its a different generation. I would have still eaten them when I was little if they had currents for eyes etc. One of my favourite snacks was malt loaf!

That baker needs to be told gingerbread men are for adults too and  not just for children. What if I had a chocolate allergy then what? Bring back currant eyes.

As much as I like chocolate I would like to see the return of current eyes. I like cakes and biscuits with currents/raisins in.

I hate currants, I always have to pick them out.  Raisins are ok though.

How about a chav gingerbread man with trainers and a baseball cap?
