Don't worry, we'll all die in a huge nuclear inferno one day and all the problems will go away...

Not if you are 100 miles from the explosion, they won't.

What about a major cometry impact?  A comet or asteroid half a mile wide on impact, would create a crater 25 miles wide and 2 miles deep.  The impact blast would vapourise anything within a 80 miles radius.  Anything within a further 350 miles would be incinerated/obliterated by the shock waves.  Hurricane strength devastation would be felt up to a 700 miles radius.  Seismic tremors would be felt globally.  After the initial impact the dust thrown up into the atmosphere would create a 'nuclear winter.'

Good call bounty because we were in a near miss with an object that was about the size of a football pitch a few weeks back.

Although 74,000 km sounds way off, in atrological terms that a Crikey, my turtles neck is popping out.

It's only a matter of time and then we'll have to call on Sean Connery or Bruce Willis for help!

Not quite a nuclear inferno though. Winters tend to be cold.
