Chocolate bar helps protect planet

A chocolate bar is offering consumers the chance to save a piece of tropical rainforest with every purchase.

Fairtrade Swiss chocolate bar Organic Meltdown has teamed up with UK charity the World Land Trust to guarantee the security of one Ecuadorian tree whenever a single bar is sold.

And thanks to an agreement with Google Earth, anyone who types the specific number found on the bar's wrapper into Google's mapping service will be able to pinpoint the exact area being saved.

Available in four mouth-watering flavours, Organic Meltdown is a premium organic range that's made using carefully selected Fairtrade ingredients from Ecuador, Madagascar and Peru.

Brand Stand, the company behind Organic Meltdown, said it hopes to save five million trees by 2012.

Hayley Whitham, director of Brand Stand, said: "We're already committed to saving our first forest of more than 500,000 trees in Ecuador.

"This is the first chocolate bar range that's saving trees, and it gives chocolate lovers a perfect reason to treat themselves.

"Inevitably, producing chocolate clocks up many food miles, but this is a genuine way of putting something back and doing something positive for the environment."

Organic Meltdown bars are available in all Waitrose stores in 90g bars in Dark (71% cocoa), Milk (38% cocoa), Indian Spice (71% cocoa), and Rooibus & Raspberry (58% cocoa) flavours priced £2.19.
