One thing that blessed me this week was that, as part of their literacy programme, our most disaffected kids looked at the origins of poppy wearing and did some reading and research about the various wars that have blighted the 20th century and the early part of this century. They looked at poetry, diary entries from soldiers and a story about a boy soldier who died in WW1. They also wrote personal thoughts and verses. Without exception, those kids, who normally cause havoc and chaos in the classroom, paid rapt attention to all the activities and showed a deep respect for the sacrifices made by those affected by war. i was truly blessed and very proud of them.
