There have been several news stories this week that have made me wonder what is happening to human decency.
Firstly, a man of 44 punched an old man of 96 on a tram because the tram was crowded and the younger man could not squeeze through a gap. The elderly man, who needed sticks to even stand up, was blinded in the attack. The attacker received a soft, non-custodial sentence.
In another horror, a man urinated on a dying woman in the street. The woamn, a vicitm of intimidation and bullying for years, collapsed in her doorway and instead of helping her, a neighbour urinated on her and subjected her to 30 minutes of other indignities until emergency services intervened. Other people stood around watching the attack.
Finally, in my own city, an immigrant from eastern Europe, brought to the city by an agency in the hope of securing employment, was duped into slavery. He was kept locked up in a house, forced to wear the same clothes for a year, forced to work in the fields picking crops and then forced to hand over all of his wages. He was hardly fed. His ordeal was over when a witness spotted him making a dash for freedom, only to be over-powered and bundled back into a car. Police traced the car to a house in the city where they found him being imprisoned. He sopke no English and had to explain his ordeal to a policeman who speaks Polish.
Can you believe that such scumbags as the perpetrators of the above crimes can exist?
