It's an annual ceremony held in the village of Stilton, near Peterborough and yes, they do use real cheeses and they do have teams entering, and individuals. I don't know what happens to the cheese afterwards but it's to celebrate the famous Stilton cheese.
There are lots of strange rituals in the villages here abouts. In one, they have the world famous conker championships and in another village, the ancient pig racing day is held (people sit on the pigs and raceeach other).
In the small town of Whittlesey a few miles away, the strawman ceremony was reinstated about ten years ago. That goes back centuries.
This is the Fens where we say Fenland born, Fenland bred, long in the arm and strange in the head!
