Dying of a broken heart?
« on: February 20, 2007, 01:30:59 pm »

A dolphin appears to be dying of a broken heart after her Italian trainer was murdered.

The mammal, called Mary G, was rescued from the sea and nurtured back to health by Tamara Monti, who became her "substitute mother".

But 37-year-old Ms Monti was found stabbed to death at her flat in a frenzied attack which her 35-year-old neighbour Alessandro Doto has now confessed to.

Since the murder, Mary G has lost 110lbs, refusing her daily diet of milk and squid. She is also failing to respond to medication for an infection.

In a desperate bid to help, Ms Monti's fiancé has taken charge of her care but seems to be unable to make a difference.

Keepers are now hoping the introduction of an older dolphin called Pele into her aquarium could help ease her pain and encourage her to eat.

I didn't believe it was possible to die from a broken heart, but my other half definitely believes it's possible.

Hmm it makes you wonder doesn't it. Rather than dying of a broken heart I think it's more to do with the depression and lonliness that follows losing someone you love.

You hear of old couples dying a few days apart. I think it's almost like they lose the will to go on without their partner.
Who needs karma when you know you're great already?

There was a story in the news about a man who died in hospital and his wife leant over to give him a kiss and collapsed over him and died too while their son was there. I definitely believe you can die from a broken heart.

That was what happened to my partner's grandparents.

I have heard of this too.  I think 'broken heart' is a slightly inaccurate description, but I think there can be some physiological process, which kills some people who have suffered the loss of a loved one.

Oh that's so sad.

I hope Pele's presence helps her get better or at least provides company and companionship so she doesn't have to die alone.
